The year is flying by, and prom is just around the corner! If you were to ask a group of adults about their most memorable high school experiences, “prom” would undoubtedly be mentioned more than just a few times. Prom is one of the most exciting events in a student’s high school career, especially for seniors! Along with graduation, prom is one of the most memorable school events.
Prom has long been touted as a rite of passage for high schoolers, although the all-American tradition actually began in northeastern colleges in the mid-1800s. Short for the French-originated word “promenade” (meaning, “to walk about, in, or on”, prom was originally more akin to a debutante ball. Prom was quite popular amongst ivy league schools, where the purpose was for graduating students to be presented to their community and to demonstrate proper etiquette and social skills to the other students.
By the early 1900s, some high schools had adopted the practice as it had gained popularity among a younger demographic. It wasn’t until the 1930s that a bigger shift began to take place. Over time, prom became less of a demonstration of etiquette and social status and began to morph into the fun, carefree dance party it is today.
